Laura Kay

For as long as she can remember, Laura has been obsessed with music. Some of her earliest memories are of her performances of Annie’s “Tomorrow” from her high chair – before she was walking, she was singing. This love of music (and love of sharing it with others!) has stuck with her all these years later, and today she delights in helping others hone their own performances of their favorite songs.

Laura holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Contemporary American Literature from Penn State University’s School of Music; a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music; and an Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She is currently pursing her PhD in Vocal Performance at NYU Steinhardt, where she is studying Long Haul COVID in Singers, as well as the connection between psychology and vocal pedagogy in the teaching studio. She holds positions on the faculties of NYU Steinhardt and Temple University.

Laura enjoys an active performing career in New York City as an expert in modern American opera. She is known for her recital programming, both as a solo lyric soprano, and with her trio, the CIRCE Trio, with cellist Isabel Fairbanks and pianist Zach Mo. She has performed with opera companies around the United States, and has been seen in leading roles in operas like Bizet’s Carmen and Verdi’s La Traviata. She is an avid supporter of new compositions, and works regularly with new composers – one of her favorite projects is premiering works for students in the Evening Division at the Juilliard School.

Laura’s early musical education began in violin, and expanded to include guitar, cello, and piano. Her love of music theory, music history, dramatic interpretation and character development led her to tutor students in music theory and audition preparation as a college and masters student, and plays an active role in her teaching today.

For over 10 years, Laura served as program director for community music schools around the New York metropolitan area, developing and implementing musical programming for children and adults. She has worked with Turtle Bay Music School, 92Y School of Music, Hoff-Barthelson Music School, and Opportunity Music Project.
